Authentic Kerala cuisine restaurant

The "Tharavadu" in Leeds is an award-winning restaurant specializing in authentic cuisine from Kerala, a region in southern India. Since its opening in 2014, it has quickly established itself as one of the best Indian restaurants in the UK, receiving an impressive list of accolades, including multiple Oliver Awards for Best Indian Restaurant in Leeds, as well as a recommendation in the Michelin Guide. The name "Tharavadu" means "family that preserves traditions" in the Malayalam language, and this is reflected in the restaurant's philosophy: it offers a culinary journey into the world of Keralan cuisine, known for its rich flavors, fresh ingredients, and the connection between land and sea. The establishment is a favorite among locals, visitors, and even celebrities – including Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli – who appreciate the authentic tastes and warm atmosphere.

The decor of "Tharavadu" is simple yet inviting, with a focus on functionality and warmth. The interior is paneled with dark wood, giving the restaurant a cozy touch, while maps of Kerala on the walls and even on the ceiling emphasize the cultural origins of the cuisine. It is a place that does not aspire to unnecessary elegance but instead provides a relaxed environment where the food is the focal point. The open kitchen allows a glimpse into the preparation process, and the atmosphere is often lively, especially on weekends when the restaurant is bustling. Despite its popularity, it remains unpretentious, making it suitable for both special occasions and spontaneous visits.

Culinarily, "Tharavadu" stands out for its Keralan specialties, which are distinctly different from the typical North Indian cuisine found in many British curry houses. A highlight is the "Tharavadu Mixed Seafood," a dish served with shrimp, mussels, and fish in a spicy coconut sauce that perfectly captures Kerala's coastal location. Also popular is the "Masala Dosa," a crispy rice and lentil pancake roll filled with spiced mashed potatoes, served with sambar and chutneys – a classic that combines lightness with intense flavor. For meat lovers, the "Kozhi Curry" stands out, a chicken dish with a rich, aromatic sauce of coconut milk, coriander, and green chilies that showcases the versatility of Keralan spices. The vegetarian options are noteworthy as well, such as the "Vegetable Stew," a mild dish with coconut milk served with appam, a soft, fermented rice pancake. For dessert, the "Kesari," a sweet semolina pudding with saffron, cardamom, and nuts, offers a gentle conclusion.

Keralan cuisine in the UK

The quality of the ingredients is a central aspect of "Tharavadu." Many products, such as spices and seafood, are sourced directly from Kerala to maintain authenticity, while the kitchen employs traditional methods – such as slow fermentation of doughs and roasting of spices to intensify flavors. The restaurant offers a wide range of options for various dietary needs, including gluten-free, vegan, and vegetarian dishes, making it particularly inclusive. The drinks menu features refreshing juices as well as a selection of wines carefully matched to the spicy flavors, and traditional beverages like masala chai to round out the experience.

Award-winning restaurant in Leeds

Service is often described as warm and knowledgeable, with a team that greets guests warmly and is eager to explain the dishes – especially helpful for those who are not yet familiar with Keralan cuisine. The staff is attentive to special requests, whether regarding allergies or preferences, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere even during peak times. The restaurant takes pride in its roots in Leeds and has recently expanded with "Uyare," a second location in the city – a testament to its ongoing success and the growing demand for its offerings.

Not often something lives up to the hype. The food is epic, flavoured with ingredients beyond the normal UK curry. Run with a warm, embracing atmosphere.

Yet another in an increasingly long (unbroken) line of fantastic evenings at Tharavadu under the ever-wonderful care of Prakash, Siby -- and more recently, Abbi -- and the Leeds-branch team. I can only repeat what I've said in my previous reviews (plural) of this fantastic restaurant -- which is -- "Have lost count of the number of times I've dined here over the years, every one of which has been a 5* experience on all counts of food, service and atmosphere. We've been looked after so well on anniversaries, birthdays and when taking colleagues and friends out for a meal. I cannot think of a _consistently_ excellent curry experience that comes remotely close to the Tharavadu. Keep up the great work -- we'll be back again and again as long as you're open! Thank you!! "

The curry was not good, and all items were overpriced. I had great expectations, but it was disappointing. It could have been done much better.

Excellent place. I was transported back to India via a delicious prawn starter, followed by a Dosa which was as big as a hat. Beautiful food, great service.

The price for vegetarian sadya thali and the food provided doesn’t match the price. What we get for an express thali for a sadya thali they added 3 dishes along with soup and sweet. The management should look at offering buffet when going for sadya thali

Not your usual Indian restaurant. With the menu being based on Keralan cuisine you won't be getting your usual korma here! Came here after seeing Gary Eats review on YouTube and we weren't disappointed. We even had a chat with a member of staff after the meal who told us that they raise money for charity as well. They were also kind enough to give us a little box to take our left overs home with us.

This was our second visit and it didn’t disappoint. My relatives were over here from Norway and I really wanted them to try the fabulous food in this restaurant. They make everything from scratch, the recipes are full of fresh spices, herbs, vegetables, sea food or meat and fruits.Wonderful Biryani, Giant Fresh Prawns in Kerala sauce with green mango.the best paratha I ever had. Wholeheartedly recommend.

Really good spot for Indian food. Not the cheapest but big portions. Only fault was they forgot to bring out my friends drink and was quite busy in there so took a while for them to come round to remind them. But lovely staff and great food
